Need a Working Smoke Alarm?

Helping Keep Cordova Homes and Families Safe

The Cordova Volunteer Firemen’s Association is dedicated to protecting our community through prevention, education, and preparedness. One of the simplest — and most effective — ways to stay safe at home is by having working smoke alarms installed in the proper locations.

Why Smoke Alarms Matter

Smoke alarms provide an early warning when a fire starts, giving you and your family valuable time to escape safely. According to national fire safety data, working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by nearly half. Unfortunately, many homes either lack smoke alarms entirely or have alarms that are outdated, improperly placed, or no longer functioning.

Fires can grow and spread quickly, often filling a home with smoke before flames are visible. In many cases, especially during nighttime hours, occupants may not smell smoke or wake up in time without a properly functioning alarm. Smoke alarms serve as your first line of defense, alerting you to danger when seconds truly matter.

Proper Placement & Maintenance Is Key

Having smoke alarms is important — but having them installed correctly and maintained properly is just as critical. Smoke alarms should be placed:

  • Inside each bedroom
  • Outside sleeping areas
  • On every level of the home, including basements

Alarms should be tested regularly, kept clean, and replaced according to manufacturer recommendations. If you’re unsure whether your smoke alarms are working correctly or are placed in the right locations, our members are happy to help.
